The 2013 Auld Enemy Dinner was held on the eve of the Calcutta Cup fixture, at The Dorchester in London. Over 300 guests attended and the business, rugby, sport and military worlds once again came together to celebrate the unique rivalry of this rugby fixture.
With so many famous rugy faces past and present from both sides of the Border in the one room, the stage was set for a fantastic evening, all controlled beautifully by the very lovely Jill Douglas who compered the evening.
A lively & competitive interactive “True or False” quiz started the evening off and saw a predominantly “English” table win fabulous engraved Glengoyne hip flasks as well as bottles of champagne for their table! We heard from Neil Boyd, (UK Commercial Director) of our fantastic Sponsors, Glengoyne, who also supplied our end of dinner dram!
General Gordon Messenger, the military guest of honour, also spoke of the help that the monies raised does for our Armed Forces. The beneficary of the evening, The Clocktower Fund at Hereford, was represented by several members and provided two wonderful auction prizes.
The Players’ Panel made up of Martin Johnson, Jason White and Gary Armstrong gave the audience a rare & amusing insight into what it is like to play in the world’s oldest international fixture. Andy Nicol ably fired the questions at them.
The UK’s greatest auctioneer Mr Jonny Gould then took to the stage. Jonny left the audience bent double and penniless with his unique style of auctioneering! Mark Harper from the jewellers Pleasance & Harper, who had kindly donated two amazing Omega watches to the raffle, witnessed two lucky winners receive their amazing new wrist wear.
The evening was a huge success in all aspects and was a great first foray into London for the Auld Enemy Dinner.
